Scott R. DeFreest is a Principal with Strategic Valuation Group, LLC ("SVG"). Mr. DeFreest has eight years of business valuation experience in the context of estate and gift tax, income tax, litigation support, financial reporting, transactions, and employee stock ownership plan administration. Mr. DeFreest also focuses on determining discounts for lack of control and lack of marketability for fractional interests in real property, and for interests in entities that hold real property, marketable securities, or other assets.
EDUCATION & Professional Designations
Mr. DeFreest received his Masters in Business Administration from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. As part of his Master’s thesis, Mr. DeFreest worked with an international company to develop an investment quality strategic business plan for their company to enter the North American market. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, with a concentration in Finance.
He is also a Level III Candidate for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. In addition, Mr. DeFreest is in the process of completing the education requirements to receive the Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) designation with the American Society of Appraisers.
WORK HISTORY
Prior to the formation of SVG, Mr. DeFreest was a Valuation Manager with Business Enterprise Company, Inc. ("BEACo"), where he focused on the valuation of closely held businesses and intangible assets. Mr. DeFreest’s efforts were focused on providing valuation services, including financial, economic, business, and valuation issues for clients in a wide array of litigated and non-litigated issues. His valuation experience included valuing businesses across numerous industries.
Prior to joining BEACo, Mr. DeFreest worked for Morgan Stanley as a member of its Investment Management group. As an investment analyst, he undertook various research projects to provide ideas and information to fund managers.
Mr. DeFreest also worked in corporate finance at a Southern California production company, with a focus on project valuations and financial feasibility studies.
